When it came to designing her 2,000-square-foot house in New Delhi, Nizamuddin west, Kissa Zehra – an interior designer and a stylist, was clear that she wants an aesthetic that leans elegant and gracious, not too fussy but comfortable, and joyful. Updating the home space to suit their family's contemporary lifestyle while retaining the character was a tough task. Nature, Design aesthetics, personal life journey and love for details are powerful shapers of a spatial story and this house is exactly that.
“I feel home is where the heart is” said Kissa. While designing the house they were inspired by surrounding nature and wanted to bring the outside- inside. The large window floods the living room with natural light and leads you to a riot of lush green filled balcony. The soulful colour anchors the space while witnessing a-lot of colour-play, artwork and materiality inspired from nature. The grandeur of the house unifies with majestic chandeliers, beautiful marble flooring, a mix of refined yet approachable pieces clad in distressed wood to soften the sense of formality –offset by more casual touches across the space.
She captured her youthful nature by making different art pieces and wall decor the focal pointaccessorised with decorative pieces from pottery barn and contrasting bright and subtle colours.Small interesting nooks throughout the house become conversation corners for guests. “I didn’twant the house to feel like every other house you see,” recalls Kissa. “So we zeroed in on all thedetails, every decision was so carefully considered, all the small things made such a difference.” TheHand painted floral artwork on the wall and the ceiling inspired by the nature creates a line ofcontinuity and extends a serene energy. The Black and white photo wall greets guests in the passageand takes you down the memory lane.
There’s a sensuous feel to the whole space, she even extended that concept to the furnishings -Cane, Leather and solid upholstery runs throughout the house. While travelling to Kashmir clientsloved wooden carving so much so that they bought their bed from a Kashmiri vendor - In the Masterbedroom, the Four poster bed is made from the traditional walnut wood of Kashmir and usedKashmiri local manpower to hand carved the bed. Using cane on the wardrobe shutters, fabricsandwiched between two glasses was to recreate the old memories of when they were young andused to stay in their respective hometown.
Adding hand knotted Rugs from Jaipur rugs, home décor, cushions element from Pottery barn haselevated the whole vibe of the house.
“This was not just a project it was my baby” says Kissa and the home reflects her style infused withlife and colour.
